Two million human lives ended on August 15th, 2049. The survivors of the nuclear meltdown of Daya Bay lived to be relocated to China and Hong Kong was declared a hazard zone unfit for human accommodation. Walls were built around the border to prevent radiation exposure.
That was the official statement. And no one else could say otherwise. Foreign drones were sent to survey but never returned. The official explanation blamed the radiation. Foreign diplomatic ambassadors were forbidden to go anywhere near the former harbor. Those who went returned weeks later and reported that the zone is indeed too dangerous for living. The world continues to run.
The true story that will forever be buried in the archives however, tells a different tale.
At 10:30 in the morning of July 1st, 2049, a bomb was detonated in the premises of the then Chief Executive's house. He was caught in the explosion and suffered major wounds, he survived but was paralyzed below the waist. 30 minutes later, another bomb exploded in front of the Hong Kong Police Force Headquarters, 49 injured and 2 dead. At the same moment, a video was broadcasted around Hong Kong. The video showed a man with a mask with demands, and his demands were simple.
"Give us back our Hong Kong."
What happened in the following hour was unclear, but all sources described the same thing: an armed revolution. Scores of attacks happened around Hong Kong, targeted at government buildings and police headquarters. Law enforcement forces responded equally violently. Three hours later, at least 200 deaths were reported, with injuries numbering around the thousands.
The result was a month long resistance. Conflicts between the law and the revolutionaries continued for the first two weeks, with revolutionary bases being found every other day. On the third week, a small platoon of the People's Liberation Army were tasked to root out the cause of the revolution. The remaining of July can only be described as a baptism of blood. A thousand dead, two thousand injuries, and then some. The revolution incited on July 1st was squashed by August 3rd, 2049.
But that wasn't the end. Citizens everywhere revolted. More deaths. More injuries. The Army was recalled on August 14th. On the 15th, a bomb was detonated in the city center. Two days later, 50-meter walls were erected on the militarized borders. The airport was shut down, planed destroyed. Ships patrolled the seas near Hong Kong and any vessel seen leaving the harbor were captured and its passengers allegedly executed. Electricity and water supply were cut off. With surveillance from China, Hong Kong and its remaining residents were effectively isolated from the world.
These survivors lived only to face the nightmare of an isolated land, and these are their stories.
