The bell rings. Rows of chairs and desks stand in front of us.
We scurried to our seats, afraid that Mr. Tou would claim that they were not on
time. The everyday noises of books slumping on wooden desks, rattling of
pencils, exclaims of relaxation upon finding assignments fillled the room.
Footsteps at exactly 1 second intervals walked through the
classroom door. Everyone stood up, "Good mor..."
"Sit down, class 3D," Mr. Tou's growl thundered
through the classroom speakers. We obeyed.
Mr. Tou did the usual action of taking off his glasses,
"Class, who hasn't brought their textbooks?"
A shadow stood up behind me. "Mr. Wong, once more and
detention."
Then Mr. Tou turned off his microphone, "Class, close your
textbooks. You're supposed to read the textbooks before or after the class, not
during, got it? All you need to do is listen to me."
We closed our pages of enzyme reaction. Mr. Tou continues on
pedigree analysis and formation of ATP that was only included in the form six
syllabus. Most classmates hadn't survived the first twenty minutes, many of
whom dived into the darkness between their arms and the desk. Some of us tried
to ask some questions on chemiosmosis and reasons for forming ATP, but Mr. Tou
just shook his head, "You should know this. DSE will consist of this, so
you should be sure of the answers of your questions."
We subtly shook our heads. Are we even supposed to learn this
now? Not half of the lesson had passed when the whole class had retreated to
their beautiful dreams. "Class 3D, what are you all doing? I cannot
believe that you do not even want to learn this, or you lack the ability to
interpret this knowledge."
Josh couldn’t stand it, “But Mr. Tou, we are only supposed to
know…”
“You are supposed to know about enzymes, yes. But the textbook
tells you that clearly, right? You wouldn’t be telling me this if you had read
the book. So read it after class.”
The bell finally rung again. Mr Tou immediately took his mic
and grumbled, "Goodbye Class 3D, today's assignment is chapter exercise of
Ch.5 and 6."
Everyone slowly stood up, "Goodbye Mr..." And Mr. Tou
had disappeared. I cannot wait the day when Mr. Tou retires.
